In Greek mythology, the Furies were ferocious godlike avengers who would swoop down on mere mortals and destroy them with relish or mustard. The only difference here is that when these fantastically talented presences swoop down on Darol Anger, the result is not destruction, but inspirational fireworks. Darol is a true fiddle guru, unique in his range and depth, who has spent almost four decades reinventing American string music to encompass his explorations of fiddling from around this world. He has spent his career enlightening and inspiring his fellow musicians, and vice-versa. That’s where the Furies come in.
The Furies are a handpicked collection of multi-generational virtuoso singers and musicians drawn from Darol’s vast network of talent. This version of The Furies is especially exciting, including Darol's long-time musical partner songwriter Emy Phelps, and the explosively brilliant new string duo, the phenomenal double bassist Ethan Jodziewicz and award-winning Appalachian fiddler and singer Tatiana Hargreaves in a passionate and virtuosic acoustic string experience with vocals.
Emy Phelps is a remarkable vocalist/guitarist and a star in the Pacific Northwest who put her career on hold to raise four kids and is now back in the game. She was a founding member of Brian Ransom's Ceramic Ensemble, touring internationally from 1980–1987 As a member of that ensemble she did research on indigenous music in Peru. She obtained a degree in education, teaching at elementary and middle schools and successfully raising a family, but now her public work continues as a recording artist, a member of the Furies, and as a duet with Darol Anger. In addition to her current release, Look Up, Look Down, she is the featured vocalist on the new Furies release, and has a previous recording entitled As It Should Be on Sweet Mercy Records. She has participated in recordings by Patrick Brayer, Chris Darrow, Norma Tanega, Taarka, and Duke McVinnie.
Tatiana Hargreaves has intensively steeped herself in music played with oldtime musicians Bruce Molsky, Paul Brown, John Hermann, Franklin George, and more. A first prize winner at the Clifftop Appalachian Fiddle Contest, she has also maintained a connection to classical, new acoustic and bluegrass music, performing with Bruce Molsky, Darol Anger, Rushad Eggleston, The Punch Brothers, Sara Watkins, Laurie Lewis, and Mark O'Connor, among others, and at festivals including the Savannah Music Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and the Pickathon Music Festival.
Ethan Jodziewicz (pronounced "yo-jeh-vits") is a double bassist who combines technical virtuosity with simplicity and passion, seeking to inspire audiences with music without boundaries. Ethan is at festivals and concert halls across North America from RockyGrass to Carnegie Hall and can be seen on stage with Darol Anger, Mr Sun, Sierra Hull, and others. He is a student of Edgar Meyer at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
